Few days after the launching of the Ondo state chapter of the southwest security network, two persons have been abducted in the state.
The kidnappers who abducted Mr. Surajudeen Alao and a yet to be identified okada rider on Ikun-Oba road on Saturday have contacted their families to demand a ransom of ten million naira for the release of their victims.
The commander of Amotekun corps in Ondo state made this disclosure to Nigerian Cable news online on Monday.
Follow the Abduction of Mr. Surajudeen Alao of Oba Akoko kingdom of Akoko southwest local government area only five days after the launching of the Ondo state chapter of the southwest security network code-named Amotekun, Nigerian Cable news online sought to gathered some facts about the current status of the security network.
After the kidnappers went away with their victims who were abducted on Ikun – Oba Akoko road while returning from Ikun day festival. there has been a highly level of anxiety among Residents of the state over how effective Amotekun is after five days of it’s inauguration.
On our enquiry, an officer of the Amotekun corps who spoke with Nigerian Cable news online on the condition of anonymity said the corps members are yet to receive their Appointment letters, and that they have since returned to their various homes waiting to be called upon on a date yet to be announced.
The officer, who said only 200 of them went through the training and inauguration added that they were told that their ranks will also be announced later.
However, the state spokesperson of the two major opposition Parties in the state, Mr. Peretie Ikanto of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Mr. Felix Olatunde of the Zenith Labour Party were of the opinion that Amotekun is likely to be misused for Political gains.
The PDP PRO said:
“Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN has cashed in on the general insecurity situation in Ondo State in particular and Nigeria in general to create the impression that the launch of AMOTEKUN is the end of the security challenges in the State.”
“As much as the idea of Amotekun is a welcome one, nothing has changed. As a matter of fact, there was a case of kidnapping in Oba-Akoko just few days after the official launch of the security outfit in Akure. The personnel have all gone back to their various homes. It is clear that, the launch was hurriedly done to score very cheap political point.”
“Akeredolu should stop playing politics with the lives of Ondo State people.” He added.
His colleagues in the ZLP also said:
“The justification for the existence of the regional security outfit, Amotekun can only be adequately established in it’s fight against insurgents and bandits within the South West territory. Amotekun is purposed to serve the people and that’s what it should.”
“They are part of us and are supposed to avoid being used for any anti people exercise”
“If anyone is planning to accrue an undue advantage to himself through Amotekun in the forthcoming gubernatorial election, it would only amount to monstrous mirage. Because it won’t work.”
“Within the first five days after launching the security outfit, their was kidnapping around Oba Akoko in the state. People got dissilutioned and started querying the existence of Amotekun if the bandits could still operate unperturbed. Some quickly concluded that the launching of this outfit could have been aimed at intimidating people before and during the forthcoming election.”
“It’s in the people’s opinions that the regional security should refuse to be abused while they serve the purpose of protecting our regional territory.”
Speaking on the Kidnap incident, the P.R.O of the Ondo state Police command, Mr. Tee-leo Ikoro said the police is still investigating and hope to unravel the location of the victim and rescue them soonest.
The state commander of Amotekun in Ondo state, chief Adeleye while reacting to the incident said his officers swiftly moved into action and pursued the kidnappers into the Bush until they were no longer able to continue. He added that the police was contacted for support and that they have been able to link the incident to a suspect within the Oba kingdom, who is presently in detention.
Adeleye also said the kidnappers have contacted the family of the victim to ask for a Ransom of ten million naira on the victim, while the families are offering two hundred thousand naira.
Adeleye said the Families have been advised to keep the negotiation on without paying, saying that their investigation is already at an advance stage.
